I use the Audible player constantly. I keep multiple books loaded on memory cards all the time. Between my wife and I, our subscription total is four books per month, so I have quite a few to choose from. (By the way, my favorite author for audio books is Terry Pratchett (for print books, too.) I have several styles of standard Walkman-style headsets -- ear buds, super-light, foldable, sports -- all work fine.
A couple of notes:
Audible player will automatically continue down its playlist. It also reacts to the scroll wheel on the left of the Axim. So, for Audible Books, I generally use the Microsoft Reader. It lists the Audible books in the library and plays it using the Audible player as a plug-in. The interface is not as dynamic for fast forwarding and rewinding, but it is less sensitive to accidental button presses, and does not automatically start the next book.
Also, remember to PAUSE/STOP your book before powering off the Axim , otherwise, you will get caught in a loop that could require you to soft reset (although completely exiting Audible Player or Reader usually works).
