I'm guessing that the WRX is not standard RS-232 and so you might be suffering from the same problems as those who've tried to interface with GPS systems.

The issue is that the DELL serial cable plays an integral part in setting the proper RS-232 signal levels (The box on the cable). This box has an ASIC which gets it's power from the device the cable is hooked up to (not the Axim).

There is a clever solution (if this is your problem) that was posted previously on this site:

I would recommend you scope or measure with a DVM (if possible) the DTR line and see if this is indeed your problem.
