Ok I'm pretty new with PPCs but I'll try to tell my experiences with X3i.
I've never tried ad-hoc connections so maybe my experience is only for Access Points.
First when I got my X3i playing with it I switched on wireless and I went to settings-conections-wireless ethernet there was a tick box on the screen "Automatically connect to non preferred Network" (I can't remember if this was ticked by default) and tick the box.
First of all my access point broadcasts SSID (no way to switch it off) when I switched on the wireless on the X3 it automatically detected my access point and noticifation pops up on the screen.
Tapped connect and a window popped up asking for WEP key. At this point i had to and configure a new WEP on the access point to get this information.
When all setup back to the X3 start wireless again.
Settings-Connections-Wireless Ethernet... SSID of my wireless network on screen...
Tap on the name
Select This connects to the internet
Tap "Authentication"
Enter WEP settings (same as wireless access point)
Now my X3i working on the internet. Connection a bit ropey though. Fixed by
Settings-Connections-Dell WLAN Utility
Tap advanced Tab and disable power saving.
X3i now working flawlessly.
Now this is how I got my X3 to connect to the wireless network there could be some differences in your network.
1. My broadband router acts as DHCP server. Maybe you could have to assign a fixed IP and DNS servers for your X3.
2. If your access point does not broadcast SSID on the wireless ethernet settion of connection tap on "Add new setting and manually enter the SSID and WEP settings.
Hope this helps
