When you want to beam a file, tap and hold on it until the mini-menu pops up next to it. One of the options on the menu should say "beam _" in which _ is replaced by the type of file. For instance, if you to go your Contacts list and tap-hold on a name, the menu will pop up and you can choose "Beam Contact..." That should do it.
You might also want to go to Settings --> Connections --> Beam. You can choose to "Recieve all incoming beams" there.
