Two developments.
First, I broke down much sooner than I should have and bought Anthelion for $16.96 from Handango with coupon code 37C10.
Second, it does seem possible to lower mission difficulty while in the midst of a campaign below the default difficulty selected at the beginning of the campaign. I'm not positive about this, but i changed difficulty to easy on a couple of missions and they were indeed easier...
also, i played a mission with two capital ships and probably 15 fighters engaged in combat plus some stationary items, and performance was still perfectly smooth. there did seem to be the tiniest hint of a slowdown, but i couldn't be sure if i was imagining it or what. in any case it did not affect playability in any noticeable way.
