OK, I finally got someone at Dell (in fact the Dell rep to our University store).

The daily bump of one day in the shipping date had been going on for nearly two weeks. I suspected this string of est ship dates was the result of an automated function, not the result of anyone making any kind of assessment of shipping and/or manufacturing. I was right.

I was told this automated function should not have been invoked (not clear if that means he thinks it shouldn't be used or in fact it should not have been turned on for me or anyone?).

Furthermore, "manufacturing" tells him the REAL est ship date is 2/24, but there are no guarantees.

This doesn't explain why many who have ordered much later already have their units..... but, it's progress (or an illusion of progress).
