Router to Wired School Network

Ok...so I have a little dilemma.

I want to persuade the resident tech at my school to help me install a high-gain 802.11b antenna on the roof. (PVC Pipe with an apple airport on top, I believe. Please correct me if I'm wrong) If I placed it smack dab in the middle of the roof of the school, can I get transmissions from it up to 300 feet away downstairs, inside the building? Or should I install a $40 router inside the building and set it on 1 MBPS? Basically I want to be able to check and send e-mail, message my buddies, and surf the net. Can I get just a run of the mill wireless CF card and get this kind of range?

My high school is made out of brick and the walls are 4 inches thick and the floors are about a foot thick. Can a router transmit through that?
