I've found that the upgrade provides very noticable improvement on both PXA250 and 255 processors. On the 255 you also get a significant improvement in battery life.

Before the upgrade, I could watch about 4 hrs of video on one charge - now I hit 6+hrs.

Also 'being left behind' is relative. I don't know too many developers who will optimise their apps for say a PXA265 processor to the point where it won't run on 250 or 255s. That's just bad economics. Since the instruction set for the 265 is only a little different - unless your app really, really needs that optimisation, it's nuts to dis so many potential customers (ie: well, almost all current PPC owners).

Dropping MIPS and SH3 made sense. Then, you DID have a problem with every app having to be compiled and tested on three different platforms. That costs money and takes time. Picking one and sticking to it made sense. Switching that one regularly doesn't.

The ARM XScale is the 'official' platform. It's not going away soon.
