I actually started using my first X5 right out of the box without charging at all (until I noticed the battery was at 30-something %), and that battery didn't even experience poor performance, lasting over 11 hours with the today screen on low brightness in a test.
charging for 4 hours may increase the number of charges available, but it does not see to affect actual usage time a hair.

I agree with this my battery was around 57% charged as I remember and I used it to around 25% then fully charged for four hours. While I was away at the families Christmas day last year.
