I don't believe the X3i can use a CF card, so that's out. And, at least on the X5, there have been significant issues with Sandisk SD cards. I don't know if these are also issues with the X3i or not.

Yes, you need a (ha! several!) storage card, Secure Digital for the X3i. Don't get less than 128 MB and try for a 256MB if you can afford it. I have Lexar, Kingston, and PNY which are all working well with my Axim (X5, though).
