I kept the Inbox checked in ActiveSync > Options, but under the Settings for Inbox, there is no checkbox for Inbox, per se--just checkboxes for folders underneath Inbox.
With Inbox checked at the ActiveSync > Options level, at the next synchronization, the current messages in my Outlook Inbox were synchronized to my PPC. The original offending messages remained--even though they no longer exist in Outlook. Bad sign.
Anyway, I unchecked Inbox at the ActiveSync > Options level and sync'd again. This time, the current messages were removed from my PPC; however, the original offending messages (all from May 2003 and earlier, BTW) remained.
When both the current and old messages were on my PPC, I noticed one difference between the two: Every current message had an envelope icon, whereas every old message had no icon whatsoever.
