The others have said enough and I dont need to repeat the info...but I would like to add one thing.

The CF GPS units are nice if you are going to ever want to walk around with the GPS unit. If you go external you will not have the capability.

Also, at first I felt the same as you, but finally went with a CF slot GPS unit because it seems like people have fewer problems with those devices working.

I have a 512 MB CF and it is very easy to swap the two devices at any time. I also bought a 256 MB SD card that I keep my maps on.
