This happened to me when I "upgraded" - and I use that term loosely - to PPC 2003.

This solved it (at least, so far it has):
Start...Settings...System...Brightness... then uncheck the "Dim/light display using power button" box.

If that's not it for you then, sorry, I have no clue.
