I've heard of users making their own screen protectors, and having the material between the casing and the screen ... causing a continuous touch. It disables the screen like you say.
If this is not the case, there may be a loose connection or foreign matter under the edge, or it was improperly assembled. Another user made a protector that had a poorly cut edge with burrs on it, and a piece of it got lodged under the casing after removal.
