Possibilities
You didn't say what you did regarding the blown motherboard. Did you completely re-install your operating system and apps? If not, how did you convince WinXP to play nice with your new motherboard (different processes have different success rates).
Also, one very important thing. Uninstall any antivirus software and turn off the WinXP firewall if it's active. It turns out that the presence of Antivirus software (just disabling doesn't work--I know, because I spent an entire week wrestling with this particular problem on a friend's X3 with the same problem) or a Firewall will kill usually kill a new connection.
