well, I spoke with dell tech support (after holding for about 2.5 hours and several incorrect extensions) and their answer was "it is designed to operate that way". that is consistent with the comment from foodawg. too bad...i hope nobody buys it for that purpose...i had an audiovox maestor previously, and the voice recorder was crystal clear, which is probably why i had high expectations for the axim.
