I found with a friend's Dell computer, and their brand new X3, that ActiveSync wouldn't install properly while McAfee anti-virus was installed. I don't mean just running. I mean, even with McAfee turned off AS still wouldn't load correctly. However, once McAfee was completely uninstalled, it all went in easy as pie, and then McAfee was re-installed. So, check your firewall (if you're running one) and check your anti-virus (if you're running one).
