Try a quality screen protector (I'm partial to the Brando, but there are plenty of others around.) A colleague had a significant scratch on his axim and after installing the Brando you couldn't feel it, and couldn't see it unless you knew where to look. It might be worth a try before you spend the money on a new digitizer.
