Well I have to admit that I was pretty excited about this post when I first read it. I ran over to the site and downloaded the media encoder (it is free!). After encoding an avi file I have noticed two problems. First, after using VirtualDub numerous times, I can tell you that media encoder seems to take a longer period of time to encode. Second, the file, once converted to wmv, had a horrible gap in audio right from the start of the movie. I have never experienced that with any of the 30 or so encodings that I have done with Virtual Dub.

Overall, it seems to do the same thing as VirtualDub (which is also free) with these few differences. I must admit however that the interface is much easier to navigate and the encoder seems to be set up well. Though VirtualDub requires a greater level of knowledge to manipulate, it seems that a benefit to it is just that...more to manipulate. Maybe I will enjoy media encoder more as I experiment with it but for now I will stick wich VirtualDub. Especially after spending hours trying to figure out how to use it properly!
