I guess it's supposed to keep one of the holes from opening up - though I was too panicked to realize it at the time I played that area. I just kept going to the fountain on the left. I would get my mage set up with a spell so she was ready to go into battle right away. I re-entered the hallway following the timing of the holes and could usually get one spell cast before I fell into the basement. I basically just repeated this until I got rid of the creep at the end of the hall. After that you can walk down the hall. You just have to remember to time your steps with the holes or you will fall again.

Yeah those stupid magma monsters were hard, but I beat them, now I am stuck. I can't figure out what to do next. I must be missing some keys somewhere, guess I will have to leave the fire empire and scout around the rest of the world to see what In can find.
