This is the most annoying, dirtiest little PIE secret out there. I've been plagued by this at times whether connected via Wi-Fi or cell modem, whether using using WEP or not. Some have suggested its tied to IP conflicts and to release/renew but that doesn't seem to work either.
There is no rhyme or reason why it kicks in, often during a session of sucessful internet browsing, but when it does, you are F'ed. Most of the time, a soft reset works, maybe a router reboot, othertimes nothing will work except time. I've never gotten a consistent reason or cure for it and its rarely discussed.
My kingdom for a solution!!!
