To answer your second question, yes, there is. You can use the Dell Backup program... OH wait, I'm stupid - that doesn't work... I tried it once, then did a hard reset, but I guess I did that to my SD Card... I dunno. I guess you could give the following a try, if it's not what you're already doing.

Open up the Data Backup program on your Axim. Try backing up just the PIM Databases you want to backup. Then back them up. Try hard-resetting, last time I tried this the app doesn't recognize the fact that the backup is there, but that was on the 2002 OS, so maybe the 2003 has updated some registry... issues.
