I always loved dogs, but hadn't had once since I was a little kid. (My mother didn't think she liked pets--more on that later.)
And, while I had a beagle as a boy, my best friend had a Golden during my teen years. She(the Golden, Sam) was a GREAT dog. Or, more accurately, a great throw rug. Just loved to lay on the floor and get real close to people.
Petless for years until I began to date my (now) wife. She had two cats: T.C. and Mandy. Didn't care much for Mandy. Too much like a cat. Aloof and independent. Everything was on her terms. But, T.C. was/is COOL. (He's a tuxedo cat with a bumble-bee ring on his tail.)
He was like a dog. He loved to be near people, to play, and to be in the middle of the action. I used to drive up to my wife's house and he'd run up to greet me as I opened my car door. We bonded!
Somehow, I convinced her family to let me have T.C. And, we've been together ever since about 1996. I think he was the dowry for my eventual wife. No complaints.
A few years ago we decided to get a companion for T.C. We went to our local shelter and found a tiny little Tiger cat and I picked her. She's Bella and she's still tiny. It took T.C. about 6 months to get over the shock, but since that time they've gotten along incredibly well. They play and chase each other whenever they aren't sleeping on top of one another. She's really sweet and a little shy, but T.C. has tought her well, and she's becoming more and more people-friendly.
Then, my wife and I got married, bought a house, and got the best wedding present ever: my best friend (who used to have Sam, the Golden), gave us money to use to buy a Golden puppy! We found Emory and he's been with us for almost three years.
The cats love him and he loves them--although he sometimes loves them a little more OVERWHELMINGLY than they can take. But, they all seem to get along really well.
Now the true test is coming...
My wife and I are having a little girl in about a month. Our first child.
This ought to be interesting. Of course, she'll probably be a big animal lover like her folks.
We're kind of hoping she ends up becoming a Vet!
