How long did you leave your battery off your Axim? Axim's back-up battery is supposed to be providing power while you have your main battery removed. Either your back-up battery did not have enough juice or your Axim is just defective. If you are sure that your back-up battery has more than enough juice, then I would contact Dell.
By the way, you cannot recover anything except from your back-up.
