I don't know if you use PPX, but with the latest betas there's been some new advancements you may be interested in using. One is that you can do exactly what you asked for above. You can set a slot and put #memory in the caption field, and it will display your current memory.
I also set it to execute the memory control panel, so i can goto it just by tapping on the current memory reading on my taskbar.
