Thanks for the conversion tips. However, the file I was trying to open was a .lit file I downloaded from a free ebook site, I hadn't converted it. Of course there's no way of knowing whether the file had converted previously.

Since starting this thread I have experimented with many more ebooks, and I have to say that on the whole the load-times are not as bad as I first assumed. Seems that it was just bad luck that the first couple of books I tried took ages. Looks like my faith may be restored... :)
