*nod* my feelings exactly. I also feel that they were quite probably illegally witholding the source code of a GPL'd piece of software - if it extended or used any other GPL'd software in the process (which I'm pretty sure it did in order to have the range of decoding abilities that it did) then refusing the ability to download the latest source code is also breaking the licences of those pieces of software....
And, as you say, has led to someone else starting up a new piece of software from scratch where improving the old one would previously have been preferable. Not preferable any more...
