Nah, that uninstall thing isn't the problem. Like I said, I have thoroughly uninstalled the application and any residual files and registry data from the PC, and tried to run this newer installer. Actually I downloaded the 7.somethingMB release version this afternoon, to try again after failing with last week's preview release. Same error message pops up during the first 5 seconds of running the new installer. It says exactly the following, then when I OK out of the error the installer shuts down as though nothing had happened.
Sprite Backup - Installshield Wizard
The installed version of the application could not be determined. The setup will now terminate.
That's all I ever get. I just wrote a fresh email to Sprite, as my email server seems to have been behaving oddly at times lately and the former letter might have got lost. They've always been great in the past in terms of support, so no doubt I'll hear back from them soon.
As for uninstalling the PPC version prior to installing this one; what for? Are you suggesting that the PPC has to be connected before I can install the package to the PC? That'd be odd. Well, okay, if that's possible I'll just try that with my iPAQ now.......
Okay, uninstalled Sprite's previous version from the 3835, connected under Activestink, and tried a few more times to install this version. Identical error, right on schedule. It has nothing to do with a device being connected to the PC.
So I'm back to being mystified, and suspecting the software. I've installed a dozen programs to the Dell in the past week via the PC (there having been a flurry of interesting new freewares released in PC-based installer packages), and none gave any hint of a problem like this. I've never seen this error in probably over 1000 installs. Completely confusing.
