In fact I was down to 50 mb on My 256. This was a big discussion on the PC passion site as well.
I brought up the fact that I never take my card out and wondered if handling the card a lot could have some adverse effect?
I also found a defrag program from www.wintersoft.com
that I checked my card with. I was 65% fragmented and after I ran the defrag program (several hours on the 256!) the SD card seemed to load files and programs quicker... seems to make sense!

As far as defragmenting. Using a USB or other reader/writing device, you can do it quicker and less possibility of errors. Make a copy of the card using the external reader/writer. format the card and copy the data from the PC back to the card. You will have contiguous data. Should only take 20 mins or less.
I don't think that acess times on the SD cards should make as much difference as a hard disc with actual hard having to physically move and acces the data.
