I provisionally tried your octopus method, (at least you need to be one to press all those buttons together!) and indeed did get to the white loader screen mentioned.

Will let you know of my progress once I get a ROM image on my CF card.

I'll be calling on one of my two chums who both bought their Axims after seeing mine.
