One potential issue that I have seen mentioned about the PC Card adapters is the power requirements of various PC Cards. I believe the CF on the Axim puts out 3.3V which may not be sufficient for some PC cards. Something to investigate maybe, though perhaps not the issue here if you are getting a connection any sort.
