Battery Life and CF Cards, Running Programs

I'm new to the Axim (after a year as a satisfied iPaq 3600 customer, and several years as a satisfied Palm customer before that)... and like many here, I'm trying to squeeze as much life out of the battery as I can.

Questions:

1. Does a CF storage card cause any significant power drainage if it's just sitting in the slot? I have a 128 MB PNY card that I mainly use for extra storage space. If it's causing me to lose any battery time, I could just as easily keep it out of the slot until I need to use it.

2. Am I losing any battery life by keeping programs running in the background? I'm not talking about Windows Media Player blaring MP3's at full volume... I'm just talking about your day-to-day PIM apps that you open something else over and then forget about. I have the Pelmar Wisbar installed and sometimes use the "Tap-and-Hold X" to close programs instead of minimizing them, but I'm never sure if it makes any difference.

Thanks!
