I asked the same question a few weeks ago, and like you said, never really got a solid answer on the subject. My University also uses VPN Networking to access the campus network. I will be receiving my x30H tomorrow if UPS tracking works correctly, so I will be of more help tomorrow.

I'm not sure about the computer support at your school, but at Texas A&M I have been assured that we can get it working, and the techies that work for the school will help free of charge. That might be something you want to check in to.
