Copyrights in the US are almost forever. I think they are up to 90 years after the death of the author.
If you are unsure about bibles go to olive tree and try out one of the free bibles. There are several that are free that aren't bad. Then you can see what you want. If you are committed to NIV then you have to go with Laridian because they have some kind of exclusive contract with Zondervan.
