I'm trying to do the same thing, access the attbi pop server thru my cell phone (also Verizon) while travelling. I don't care so much about the smtp (outgoing) server since I have other accounts available to send mail, but I would like to at least be able to receive my attbi email.
I tried the above suggestion on how to specify non-standard ports to the servers but this did not work using the PocketPC's built-in email application. Even attbi's incoming mail server (pop) requires "authentification" when accessed from off their network and I have not been able to do this, I assume because I can't access their non-standard ports but there may be SSL issues here as well.
Fortunately, attbi can be set to forward mail automatically to another address and this is the method I have been using but I would prefer direct access.
Anyone else out there have success with getting attbi email while off their network on a PDA?
