My understanding is that VGA pdas run a pixel doubling QVGA mode for compatibility thats a function of 2003SE. Only the toshiba had a pre-se VGA model and they had a very poorly done proprietary handling of this. What I have read is that there are some performance issues for doing so in SE too, but to a greater or lesser degree depending on the model. Se supposedly handles it quite well and toshiba models upgraded to se saw an immediate improvement.
Hopefully the inclusion of hardware graphics accelerators on the newer models will make that a moot issue.
So.. SE handles it and has historically resulted in slow downs but, in theory, that should not be an issue going forward.
This is just what I have read, I have no direct experience. Your mileage may vary.
