I wonder how WM2003se handles apps that set specific pixels... does it give every app a fake framebuffer and then scale it up if it needs too? Seems like it could pose a problem with gapi apps and other things that reference the screen directly.

There are GAPI problems. But once again this is a problem with WM2003SE. Meaning that assuming Dell doesn't try anything crazy, or mess anything up, in terms of software (like Toshiba did with their e80x and WM2003) then the compatibility with QVGA programs will be exactly the same between the X30 and X50H.
