You may want to make sure that you can actually ping a website (internal or otherwise) while you are connected via vpn - Just to validate that the VPN actually works. I've had similar problems with connecting to my own VPN/Corp network. I can hit the wireless network, but the VPN connection never happens. So, I just sit in limbo (though, that's not much different than any other day.
