I'll second that ogg vorbis recommendation. Using ogg vorbis, you can get more milage end up with shorter file sizes at the same quality (or better quality using the same file size)!
And in addition you would also be supporting a good cause since unlike MP3, ogg is a free format for which companies (who make players) do not need to pay any royalties :)
