I read the same review, before you posted your message, and I thought it was a positive review of the X30.
I also emailed the guy to see if the 802.11g was a typo (as b and g are adjacent on the keyboard), and the reviewer acknowledged that it was an error.
If you read the article again, he just says that it would seem that PDAs (not specifically pocketPCs) are declining because Toshiba stopped selling in USA, and Sony has stopped selling Clie's everywhere but Japan.
It's true about the original ipaqs - they're a bit slippery. I have an old Compaq iPaq h3630 - the first generation pocketpc - and the metal casing is indeed very sheer and doesn't have any obvious handholds. Whereas the X30 (and X3) have the black groove around the edge which is a natural area to hold the unit when in use.
And the comment about lack of remote software - there is an eval version on the CD, but you need to pay for it. I don't know about the new iPaqs, but perhaps what he's referring to is that they might come bundled with working remote control software (as opposed to shareware)?
And no, i don't work for TheRegister or trusted reviews. Just someone who noticed the mistakes in the original article, but thought it was a fairly positive article overall.
