I am no expert, but I would suggest going through all of the settings options in the connection manager of the axim. Verify that they are the same as the modem in the desktop.
Parity, stop bits, baud rate, etc. etc.
Double check the user name and password, and double check that you give the proper rights to the axim to log on to your desktop (device name might be needed)
Other than that, I am clueless.
