I'm a long time Palm user (Palm Pilot 500 / Palm Pilot Professional / Palm III) and my trusty Palm III was finally giving up the ghost, so I was off to find a new unit. I had the Sony NX70V (999.00 up here in Canada) and the IPAQ 5450 (1000.00+) in my sites as the two top contenders. When the Axim was released, I ordered it and have had it for about a month now.
I would have to say that the Palm OS is definitely more straightforward to use and WAY faster on the built in apps. The built in apps also work mor logically. For example, when you open a contact for viewing in Palm OS, pressing the up / down switch would change to the previous / next contact. PocketPC forces you to close the current contact and reselect the next one.
That being said, I am really getting used to my PocketPC. Moving files around between my laptop and my PocketPC is slick. The range of advanced full featured applications is impressive and the file compatibility with Windows file formats is great.
In a nutshell, if you want a GREAT personal organizer, Palms are typically cheaper, smaller, faster and excellent PIM functionality (I used Datebk5 which I sorely miss on WinCE). If you want reasonable PIM functionality with greater general computer like features, PocketPC is the way to go. I am VERY happy with my Axim and won't be looking back to Palm.
