Yes, I would agree that a separate backup of data files is worth doing. However, I would still strongly suggest making a full back up as well.

Without a full backup, one mistake and you are hosed. With one you can put everthing back the way it was before you started and try again.

And as I noted before, the restore should not affect the 'recovered' built-in files. IMHO, it is very much worth trying.
