For auto backlight, I think the IPAQ has an ambient light sensor that automatically turns the backlight off when the PDA is viewed in sunlight. Or maybe it even modulates the backlight brighness? The Axim has no such feature.

I was interested in whether having the backlight always on would change the visibility of the screen in different lighting conditins. I did some informal tests, and found that the screen visibility is never hurt by leaving the backlight on, whether in shade, cloudy, or direct sunlight. So the only issue is battery useage.

As for SD -vs- CF memory cards, there are some other posts. The big issue to me is that the Axim does not support any I/O SD cards. Whether you want WiFi, GPS, modem ... all I/O cards have to use the CF slot. This makes it a no-brainer to go for SD memory.

The Axim IR is not as strong as the Compaq. If you're into remote control, there is a nifty little device that plugs into the headphone jack (with appropriate software). This is even stronger than the Compaq. Sorry, I can't remember the name. I suggest searching the other great Windows CE site -- pocketpcthoughts.com.
