I have this same problem and have since new. Battery is new and charged 100%. Mine never does a hard reset without prompt. If I cancel the reset operation only the date, time and some settings are lost, all other data remains largely intact. My X5 was supplied as part of a Sat Nav system from an independent supplier so Dell don't really want to know. I am sending it back this morning but quality of service in the UK being what it is, I'm not hopeful of a satisfactory solution.
I should have joined this forum before buying because I now realise my brand new X5 300 besides being faulty is also years out of date. You live and learn.
