The flickering is because the current draw is too high and the voltage drops below about 5v, which is the minimum for the Axim to use. The voltage drops, the Ax quit using the power, the voltage climbs, the Ax draws again, brightening the screen, the voltage drops again, the screen dims, the Ax quits using power, etc, etc, etc. You might try doing that with the batteries fully topped off to see if the charger can hold the power up. Axims draw increasing current when the batteries are low because it uses the power to charge the battery while also running the unit. The deeper the battery discharge, the more current it demands. Bottom line: A "standard" 650mA 5v charger WON'T work because the X50 current demand forces the voltage down below 5V. You need at least 850 mA at 5V to work. The optimum is 5.4v at about 2000 mA, then it will work no matter how dead the battery is.
