I am not sure but if the filesystem is fat16 the block size will be large and with the 1 GB card you could run out of file handles in the fat table. I remember these from back in the days of old DOS. Also the root directory, at least in unix has a limit of how many files it can have in it. If you hava lot (like over 256 in root or thousands total) these could be affecting you.
I may be way off as I am new to the ppc world.
