It is not necessary to map a drive to stream media from the desktop. (in fact, I don't think this even fits the definition of streaming)

Using Windows media encoder 9 (free download), you can setup a stream over your home network. Then in WMP on your PPC (or any of your networked PC's), use the "Open URL" to play the stream.
