Check your activesync settings. Make sure you don't have it set to sync on a schedule when in the cradle.
Activesync>Tools>Options>Schedule
Also, activesync starts up whenever it sees activity on the USB port, so any spurious signals there will wake up the Axim.
BTW, you never really turn the Axim fully off. It's running constantly so it can alert you for alarms, appointments, etc. It also wakes up whenever it is connected to the cradle/cable and whenever a card (SD or CF) is inserted or removed. Clicking the power button turns the screen off, and puts the Ax in minimum power mode, but not really OFF.
