I've switched from ripping and encoding to "capturing". I simply use Windows Media Encoder and point it to my TV tuner card as input, and attach my DVD player to it. Using the settings from my DVD-to-PPC encoding guide, I end up with movies weighing in at about 60MB per hour of video.
